OtterLearn is a math learning app for children, operated by Velox Ventures Inc. ("we," "us," "OtterLearn"). We built OtterLearn for kids, so protecting children's privacy is central to how we work. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
Who this policy is for
This policy applies to the OtterLearn mobile app, the website at otterlearn.app, and related services. By using OtterLearn, you agree to the practices described here.
Information we collect
Information the parent provides
- Parent account details: your email address, used to create and secure your account and to send account-related messages.
- Child profile details: a child's nickname (not required to be a real name), grade level, and general region/curriculum, so we can personalize lessons. We ask parents not to enter a child's full legal name.
Information created through use
- Learning activity: answers submitted, lessons completed, time spent, and progress โ used to personalize learning and show parents a progress dashboard.
- Tutor interactions: questions a child asks the in-app AI tutor and the responses given, so the tutor can help and so we can keep it safe and appropriate.
Information collected automatically
- Basic device and diagnostic data: app version, device type, and crash/error information, used to keep the app working reliably.
How we use information
- To provide and personalize the learning experience for each child.
- To show parents progress, mastery, and activity in the parent dashboard.
- To operate the AI tutor and run safety checks on tutor conversations.
- To maintain, secure, and improve the app.
- To communicate with parents about their account.
Children's privacy
We take special care with children's information and aim to comply with applicable children's privacy laws, including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and comparable protections in Canada (PIPEDA) and elsewhere.
- A parent or guardian sets up the account and each child profile.
- We collect only the limited information needed to provide the learning experience.
- We do not require a child's real name, photo, or contact information.
- We do not show third-party advertising to children.
- We do not sell children's personal information.
How we share information
We do not sell your or your child's personal information. We share information only with:
- Service providers who help us run the app (for example, cloud hosting and the AI service that powers the tutor), under agreements that limit their use of the information to providing those services.
- Legal and safety reasons, if required by law or to protect the safety of users.
The AI tutor
OtterLearn's tutor is powered by a third-party AI provider. A child's question and the current problem are sent to that provider to generate a helpful response. The tutor is instructed never to reveal answers directly, and conversations pass through a safety check. We do not use children's tutor conversations to train third-party AI models.
Data retention
We keep information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. Parents can request deletion of their account and associated child data at any time (see below).
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: parents can view and update profile details in the app.
- Deletion: parents can request deletion of their account and all associated child data by emailing us.
- Regional rights: depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as GDPR or applicable Canadian and US privacy laws.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard your family's data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify parents.
